HEALTH TESTED PARENTS

HEALTH TESTED PARENTS FOR HEALTHY PUPPIES

All of our Yorkies have been vet assessed for eyes and heart and we use this information in association with genetic health testing thru DNA. Our focus is on using DNA testing to shape our breeding program. We ensure both the Sire and Dam have been genetically tested, so that if there are carriers or genetically affected dogs, we know before hand. This is the most effective way to produce healthy puppies, with an understanding of balancing DNA health while still maintaining genetic diversity. And using this technique we will never produce a puppy that is affected by one of these disorders (e.g. Progressive Retinal Atrophy).

There are many different DNA tests that are available for disease associated mutations, which does not necessarily mean that a dog will go on to develop the disease, but identifying these diseases BEFORE a planned breeding is crucial.

This strategy goes above and beyond the minimum health testing recommended by the OFA. For example, OFA eye exams will identify dogs that are affected or clear of PRA, but not those that are carriers that could produce puppies with PRA if bred to another carrier. Each and every puppy born in our home is a member of the family, and with every breeding we strive for the best genetic health, structure and beauty with our puppies.
